Handwound at my workshop here in Manchester I don't have pickups all boxed up ready to send out, each order is custom made so I can tweak the specifications to suit your own guitar & playing. If you're after a custom set of replacement Rickenbacker® or Toaster® style Pickups, just get in touch with details of the kind of voice/output you're after and I can work on the best design for you. I claw some of these frequencies back through custom winding on a machine I designed & built myself. A humbucker by nature cancels some of the buzz you get with 60 cycle hum but in doing so a whole lot of other frequencies are shut out too which can lead to a somewhat sterile sound.

I wind all replacement Ric® style Humbucker Pickups with a small, specific coil offset to open up more frequencies. Each pickup is wound at slowish speed with vintage correct thin 44AWG coil wire for my take on the original designs and can be wax-potted in a measured combination of beeswax and paraffin to cut down on microphonics. My replacement Rickenbacker® style pickups are all handwound here in my workshop. The model was a poor seller prior to 1964 and almost went out of production, which is why Rickenbacker "dumped it" on a German retailer in 1960.Custom Handwound Replacement Ric®, Rickenbacker® & Toaster® Style Pickups Vintage, Modern & Alternative Designs - Custom Handwound Replacement Pickups for your Ric® Guitarįrom the vintage bright, jangly sounds of the 50's originals, through the higher output '60s versions to modern & humbucker replacements, my Ric® & Toaster® style pickup range has been designed for a variety of sounds & playing styles - from clear, bright and well defined voices to modern, higher output versions. It may have been a prototype note that the control layout was revised from two knobs to four before Lennon acquired it two years later. '64 to demonstrate their new guitars to the Beatles! Ironically it was Thielman who inspired Lennon to purchase a Rick after he saw him playing one in Hamburg in 1960, and it was Thielman who accompanied Rickenbacker boss FC Hall to the Plaza Hotel in Feb. Here's some (poor quality) photos of John's actual 325 (identifiable by the wood grain pattern in better scans) at the 1958 NAMM Show behind Toots Thielman's right elbow. The original gold pickguard was replaced with a handmade white one. In 1973 he had it "restored" by Ron DeMarino which involved stripping off the aftermarket black finish and bringing it back to natural. unless you play the 12-string throughout the gig it's another peice of gear that can stay home.Ĭlick to expand.John's original '58 325 looks like hell today. the over abundence of laquor on the fret board. the bridge (6-string saddle? really? And I will be the first to say that I salute the fact that they are the only major American guitar company that builds their guitars exclusively in the USA. Actually if I had the cash I would get the Tom Petty model since the neck is wider and has the trapeze tailpiece.įor those of you that have them, enjoy them. One for George and one for John.Īfter owning three Rickenbackers I have came to the conclusion that they are not the guitar for me. Mal Evans was sent to purchase two strats and he returned with 2 sonic blue strats. In 1965 The Beatles were recording "Nowhere Man" and they wanted a really trebely sound. But even during Epstein's tenure as manger the Beatles used various amps and guiatrs.Īs far as the Strats are concerned. After Brian Epstein died that deal was no longer valid.

You have to remember that the Beatles only "legit" endorsement was with Vox. He later had it refinished and repaired again later. So the one he had since Hamburg was regulated to back up status after it was repaired. The Ric that Lennon used during the early days of Beatlemania suffered a broken headstock around 1964 and Rickenbacker gave him another 325.
